Every room is unique as the owners gutted an old church and created a luxury hotel in its midsts. The final result is an eclectic mixture of modern and colonial architecture that makes for a splendid stay - after 4 days, we were still finding interesting architectural features!
Our room had wonderful views, great furnishings, and a very spacious bathroom. The bed was very comfortable.
We ate in the restaurant several times and each meal was delicious; The chef is both gifted and kind.
The daily experiences provided by the hotel are fun. I thought they'd be trite, but they are very interesting and educational. You might even get to try making your own panama hat:)
The hotel is located in the old town so it's very easy to walk to the major historic sites. Also, we didn't know this, but Uber works very well in Quito. I mention this as the concierge can make reservations at Quito's many excellent restaurants and Uber removes the tension of using local cabs. More

We actually had two stays at Illa, once... read more upon arrival in Ecuador and before going to the Amazon region, and then again for two nights between the Amazon region and a Galapagos cruise. The property itself is beautiful with classical architecture and tons of character. The staff seems as though they never go home, there was someone to help with everything at all times, even on days when we had a very early (pre-6am) start, there was a staff member to provide a boxed breakfast and offer us coffee before we set out for the day. We stayed in a different room during our two stays, and both rooms are modern and comfortable with a safe for your important documents, coffee, tea, high end finishes and our second room had a beautiful view of the city as well. The restaurant in the hotel is a highlight as well, dinner was incredible with excellent service and even a visit from the owner/chef to make a dessert recommendation! We felt so taken care of and comfortable at Illa, we would highly recommend it to any traveler and very happy that our travel agent suggested it! More
We stayed at this hotel for two nights on our way to Galapagos and was a great place to come back to after a long day of travel or sightseeing.... read more The hotel is in a nice location with a few cafes and bars close by and a 15 min walk into the historical district. The staff at this hotel is fantastic. They provided the best service and when I asked where I would get a snack since we were starving after a long day of traveling, they even walked me to a cafe to make sure I could order. The rooms are clean and well appointed. Upon arrival they give you a small snack and some tea in case you are feeling the effects of altitude. Everyday they have a cultural activity where they bring in a local craftsman and have an afternoon cocktail before you go out for dinner. The breakfast here was great, with a special that the chef comes up with, fresh juice and fruit and eggs of your choice. The beds are comfortable, but the pillows were hard, but would have been great to have firm and soft options (I think it's an Ecuador thing though since I could only get nice soft pillows once). More

Oh how I wish we had this kind of service in the USA. The location is close enough to walk to everything though the staff does caution about safety after dark. They did arrange for us a great tour guide, Galo, that took us around the exterior plaza areas. Our room was beautiful and roomy. The bathroom was spa like. We did find that it would nearly impossible to take a bath for the tub to fill in a reasonable amount of time. The shower did have some some challenges as well but they did try to repair. But the space was quiet, lovely and safe. The attached restaurant was a highlight. More

We had wonderful attention from the staff. However, it came to our attention that there was demeaning behavior from Mishelle, she´s the staff leader. We could hear horrible treatment to lower rank staff members, a mean tone and a foul attitude in general. Our only complaint is that Mishelle was being absolutely HORRIBLE with her teammates. The staff was incredibly professional about this thinking about the guest's experience.
If it would have been me, I would have put Mishelle in her place. It's a pity that a high end hotel does not ensure staff well being and that their team leader has such a nasty attitude. If you care at all about employee well being in a business, I WOULD NOT return or recommend this hotel.
Other than that, the experience was amazing. my wife and I will not be coming back to the hotel because Mishelle's attitude and behavior was really unpleasant for our stay. We hope that the owners will correct this element in an other wise perfect experience. More

And, as wonderful as both the location and hotel itself are, neither hold a candle to the EXCEPTIONAL staff at the Illa Experience hotel. Each and every person on staff worked hard to make our stay a special one, which was no small feat given that our stay at the Illa coincided with several changes to our travel itinerary. When dinners out were not possible, we were treated to incredible meals inspired by local ingredients by the amazing chef (even a Father's Day cake baked by the pastry chef for my husband!), we were offered tours of the neighborhood by hotel staff, and were assisted with changing travel plans by the incredibly helpful front desk staff.
